ELIZABETHAN ERA RELIGION
The two main religions in the Elizabethan Era were protestant and catholic. In the early fifteen hundreds, the people of England practiced the Roman Catholic religion. Queen Elizabeth I seceded queen Mary and restored the Protestantism. Protestants are members of any the western Christian churches who allow and follow the principles of the reformation including the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches. Superstitions of this time arose because of the fear of witch craft and witches. People blamed unexplainable events on witches. They believed that witches could fly. They created magic potions, and were portrayed as very old women. Many of the superstations today from this period such as saying “God bless you” after you sneeze. A black cat crosses your path, not to walk under ladder and spilling salt or pepper. Witch craft was considered a form of magic. Witch craft was the practice of black magic. Black magic was involved in the use of evil spirits for evil purposes (Alchin) “Elizabethan superstion.”
“Alchemy is used to turn base medals and make then gold and the discovery of the elixir of life”. (Alchin). It was the forerunner of chemistry. Dr. John Dee was the renowned alchemist during the Elizabethan era. In 1581 Dee began to experiment entities or spirits, and on May 25th 1582 he recorded that he contacted the spirit world through his crystal ball (Alchin) “Elizabethan superstition.”
